A year ago I decided to drop out of college. I knew I wanted to be a life coach and it was clear that my psychology degree wouldn’t help me with that.
It was hard.
All over sudden everybody seemed to have an opinion on my decision. Some felt compelled to explain to me in lengthy terms exactly why I was fucking up my life for good.
I was dealing with heaps of uncertainty and wondered why on earth I couldn’t just fit in and do what everybody else was doing.
Months later I found this song that managed to speak exactly to what I felt back then.
This is for you if you’re going against the grain, pushing against the system as you figure out who you are.
I wish I had had this song as I sat in my little dorm room feeling scared about the future.
Below is an excerpt of the lyrics – my favorite part. Make sure to listen to the song here too for the full effect.
//
Am I wrong?
Am I wrong for thinking out the box from where I stay?
Am I wrong for saying that I’ll choose another way?
I ain’t trying to do what everybody else doing
Just cause everybody doing what they all do
If one thing I know, how far would I grow?
I’m walking down this road of mine, this road that I call home
So am I wrong
For thinking that we could be something for real?
Now am I wrong
For trying to reach the things that I can’t see?
But that’s just how I feel, that’s just how I feel
That’s just how I feel
Trying to reach the things that I can’t see
Hope you, hope you don’t look back, always do what you decide
Don’t let them control your life, that’s just how I feel
Fight for yours and don’t let go, don’t let them compare you, no
Don’t worry, you’re not alone, that’s just how we feel
I guess the moral of the story is to do what you really want to do, even when it’s scary. A year later I have gone through quite the roller coaster, but I did it:
Coaching is now my full time job and I get to work with incredibly inspiring women every week.
And of course, I couldn’t have predicted how it would go down a year ago, so if you’re at that stage where you have to trust in the process – trust in the process and take it one baby step at a time.
Sometimes when I get ahead of myself and wish I were more successful, more visible, more whatever already, I remind myself that a year ago I was just a little college student with a crazy dream to pursue life coaching and have my own business.
Puts things into perspective. :) Oh, my favorite exercise for doing that is this one, in case you were wondering.
If you’re making some scary decisions right now, I hope this post gave you some hope that maybe you haven’t lost your sanity entirely for wanting what you want. (you’re not alone)
If you need some more convincing, feel free to reach out and tell me about your situation.
